Create a question set

Use question sets to:

  • Group related questions under a single heading (i.e., Volunteer Experience)

  • Allow for multiple answers to the same group of questions (e.g., an applicant could have volunteered for a food bank and a homeless shelter)

Though anyone can add a question set to an opportunity, only system administrators can create question sets.

To create a question set:

  1. On an opportunity, go to the Questions tab.

  2. Select Add Applicant Question.

  3. Select Question Set.

  4. In the Question Set Text area, add a heading.

  5. Add as many questions as you want. For more guidance, see Add questions.

  6. Select Save Question Set.

Add a question set to an opportunity just like any other question.

When you add a question set to an opportunity, reviewer group, or reference questionnaire, consider the number of entries. Use the left number to set the minimum number of responses and the right number to set the maximum number of responses (up to 10).

When creating a question set, consider these best practices:

  • Control question order with prefixes: If you want individual questions to appear in a particular order, add numbers (0 to 9) or letters (a to z) to the beginning of the question text. Otherwise, questions default to alphanumeric order.

  • Use descriptive wording: Since questions from different question sets can look similar on applications, use specific wording on individual question names (e.g., Activity Name or Service Name instead of Name)

  • Think carefully about making question sets required: If you make a question set required, applicants will have to answer every question within the set the minimum number of times. So, if there are 10 questions and you ask applicants to provide a minimum of 2 responses, applicants have to complete 20 required questions.

  • Don't use question sets as part of qualification criteria: Though you can use question sets in qualification criteria, you may see unexpected results. For more information, see Question Sets as Qualification Criteria.
