Credit Card Updater

With Credit Card Updater from Blackbaud Merchant Services, you can avoid disruptions in monthly giving by keeping recurring payment data updated in your Blackbaud solutions. Credit Card Updater scans your data for expired or out-of-date credit card information and updates the credit card numbers or expiration dates for registered cards.

Credit Card Updater is currently available in Blackbaud Altru, Blackbaud CRM, Blackbaud Luminate Online, Blackbaud Raiser's Edge, and Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT. From the web portal, you can enable the service from Control panel, Settings, under Disbursement information. For more information, select your solution from the list below.

Note: Blackbaud partners with Visa Account Updater, Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater, Discover Network Account Updater, and American Express Cardrefresher to deliver the service, which is widely used in the business-to-consumer industry. Only credit cards issued by banks who participate in the service are eligible for updates.

When Credit Card Updater is enabled, Altru runs a nightly business process that registers and deregisters cards based on the following:

Cards registered

  • Recurring gifts with active, held, or lapsed statuses

  • Pledges paid in installments with a non-zero balance

Cards deregistered

  • A credit card manually updated with all new card information

  • A recurring gift status changed to terminated or canceled

  • A pledge balance changed to zero

Blackbaud Merchant Services analyzes the cards registered by the business process monthly. If Credit Card Updater determines that new card data exists, Blackbaud Merchant Services updates the data while still retaining the original payment details.

When a new sustaining gift is created in Luminate Online, it's registered for the Credit Card Updater service. To track credit card updates, Luminate Online provides several reports:

  • Interaction Details Report — Lists all constituents who had a Sustaining Gift Credit Card Updater Update Received or Sustaining Gift Credit Card Updater Response interaction on their record

  • Sustaining Gift Performance Summary Report — Tracks month-over-month total dollar amount retained due to successful updates and the total dollar amount resulting from cards that returned errors because they could not be updated

  • Constituent Interactions Count Report — Tracks constituents with new billing information and constituents whose cards were not updated

Each month, Blackbaud Merchant Services analyzes the cards registered. If Credit Card Updater determines that new card data exists, Blackbaud Merchant Services updates the data while still retaining the original payment details.

The first time you run Credit Card Updater in Raiser’s Edge or Raiser’s Edge NXT, it automatically registers credit cards on:

  • Recurring gifts, pledges, and matching gift pledges that are marked as Active or Held

  • Gifts in uncommitted non-recurring gift batches

  • Gifts in (committed or uncommitted) recurring gift batches

  • The Bio 2 or Org 2 tab of constituent records in the database view

For each subsequent run, Credit Card Updater automatically registers any credit cards added since the previous run, updates credit cards with new info, and de-registers credit cards to exclude from future updates.

Blackbaud Merchant Services analyzes the cards registered by the service monthly. If Credit Card Updater determines that new card data exists, Blackbaud Merchant Services provides updates to Raiser’s Edge NXT while still retaining the original payment details.
