Convert Assessments

Faculty can convert an assessment created with the old builder to the new assessment experience by copying or importing the assessment.

Tip: To convert multiple assessments at once, use Import Assignments. Additionally, during the import process, you can add an assessment to new class sections. Copying an assessment only creates a new instance of the assessment in the original class section.

The following will be copied to the new assessment:

  • Settings included in both the new and old builder. Settings only available in the new builder will be disabled by default.

  • Question text

  • Answer text

  • Photo and Download media uploaded to questions

The following items are not converted and must be manually updated in the new instance of an assessment:

  • Embed media in questions

  • Audio files

  • Allow Save for Later setting: This setting is replaced by Allow students to resume independently, which you must enable manually in the new experience.

  • Grades, comments, and student submissions from the copied assessment

  1. In the Assignment Center or class Assignments tab, select the context menu next to the assessment > Make a copy.

  2. A message explains that the assessment will be copied to the new assessment experience and the embedded media in questions, audio files, and the Allow Save for Later setting will not convert and must be updated manually in the new copy of the assessment.

  3. Select Yes to proceed and create a new, converted copy of the assessment.

  4. The page will refresh and the new copy of the assessment called Copy of [assessment name] will be listed.

Note: The Publish status for the new copy of the assessment will default to No. If you do not see the new copy of the assessment, check your filters to ensure you're not excluding the copy from your assignment view. Additionally, faculty will need to publish the new copy of the assessment and set it to Ready for taking before students can take the assessment.

  1. From the Assignment Center or class Assignments tab, select More > Import Assignments.

  2. Find and select the old assessment(s) you want to import. Then select Next.

  3. A message explains that you've selected an assessment that was created with the old builder and that importing will convert it to the new assessment experience. Embedded media in questions, audio files, and the Allow Save for Later setting will not convert and must be updated manually in the new copy of the assessment.

  4. Select the section(s) you want to import the assessment(s) to, then select Next.

    Note: If you would like the assignment to be included in the gradebook, you will need to use the Marking period filter.

  1. Set the Assigned and Due dates and times and the Publish status for the new instances of the assessment(s).

    You can only set one Assigned date, Due date, and Publish status for each assignment. If you need to set different dates or statuses for different class sections, you can edit the new instance of an assessment to update the section information after completing the import.

  2. Select Save and close to complete the import.

New instances of an assessment created by import will have the same name as the original assessment.

Note: You can publish an assessment during the import process, but you must also mark it Ready for taking before students can begin the assessment.

An assessment must be published in order for students to see it in their assignments. And it must be set to Ready for taking in order for students to take the assessment.

  1. Select the context menu next to the new copy of the assessment > Edit.

  2. Select Edit details.

  3. Update the Assessment name if needed.

  4. Under Publishing options, update the Assigned and Due dates and times.

  5. Set Publish to Now > Save.

  6. Select Change availability.

  7. Mark Ready for taking > Save.
