Interactive Assignment Rubrics

Academic managers can add rubrics and manage existing rubrics from a sortable list in Academics > Grades > Grading setup > Rubric bank. For more information, see Create and Manage Rubrics.

Platform Managers set access permissions for rubrics. Keep in mind that permissions are role based, so managers cannot modify permissions for specific individuals.

Modify access to Rubrics

1. Select Core.

2. Select Security.

3. Select Roles.

4. Find the role in the list. In this example, find Teacher.

5. Select the ellipsis (...) at the start of the row.

6. Select Manage role.

7. Under Tasks, you can disable rubrics by turning off My Rubrics. Disabling this removes My Rubrics from the Faculty persona completely, preventing teachers from adding, editing, and working with Rubrics in general.

8. Select Edit to update the permissions, then Save & Exit once finished.

Teachers can create, edit and modify rubrics from Faculty > My Day > Rubrics. Any rubrics a user has added or copied from the Rubric bank appears under My Rubrics. All other available rubrics, regardless if permission to add, edit, or delete has been granted, can be found within the Rubric bank.

Teachers can add rubrics to the Rubric bank, but they can only delete rubrics they own, and not those created by others.

To print a rubric, select the context menu > Print.

Note: Any associated rubrics are not included when importing another teacher's assignments.

When creating a new assignment or editing an existing ungraded assignment, select Associate rubric to add a rubric from your My Rubrics list. Once a rubric is associated, select See rubric to preview it and ensure the correct rubric is selected. If there are no rubrics to select, Associate rubric is disabled.

If you want to modify a rubric, make the necessary changes from My Rubrics and then re-associate the rubric with the assignment.

Grade students with Rubrics

From the Assignment Center, teachers select the assignment to grade. The class roster displays along with the Assigned date, Due date, Average grade, and how many assignments have been graded already. Choose a student and select Evaluate with rubric.

From here, proficiency levels for each skill can be selected, automatically adding the number of points each is worth to a counter. For example, if an assignment is worth 100 points in total, the counter first displays 0/100. Each proficiency holds a value that when selected, increases that total score. Once finished, the point total represents the student’s final score.

Each skill allows you to add comments if you want to provide additional details regarding the student's mark.

To clear all of the skill evaluations and comments you've added for a student, select Clear under Rubric evaluation.

Note: Once a rubric has been used to grade at least one student from the assignment, it is then locked down and can't be changed or edited further.

An exclamation point icon displays next to student name in the Assignment Details for grades that have not yet been committed. When ready, select Commit grades & post rubrics to commit grades and publish to students and parents. This adds all available grades into the gradebook and posts the completed rubrics so that students and parents can view them. Comment Only rubrics become available to students/parents immediately after a teacher evaluates with them.

Warning: For schools using LTI: Grades entered from Turnitin are overwritten by Rubrics. In addition, grades don't pass back from Academics to Turnitin.

If extra credit points need to be awarded, teachers have the option to manually award or deduct points even if the points were automatically calculated by the established Rubric calculation. Select Adjust points under the points earned total to select one of four options:

• No adjustment: Keep all grades as they currently are.

• Add total: essentially grant extra credit.

• Remove from total: Subtract points.

• Mark score as zero: This zeros out the grade and will remove any scores currently present.

Students and parents then see a message under the points earned inside the rubric that a manual adjustment has been made to the grade.

Once a rubric has been applied to an assignment and made available by the teacher, students can access it from the Assignment Center and then select a particular class assignment to see the assignment detail. When See rubric is selected, the rubric appears enabling the student to see teacher expectations before finishing the assignment. Once a teacher commits the rubric and grade to the gradebook, students return here to view the results. Comment only rubrics are available as soon as the comments are entered.

Additionally, if parents have access to Assignments, they can also access their child’s graded rubrics through the Assignment Center. Select the assignment from their child’s page to view the details. Under Evaluation, select See rubric to view the point totals and any comments the teacher may have left.

Note: Rubrics can be selected and viewed before grading and after.

Alternatively, rubrics can be accessed in the visual gradebook from My Day > Progress > Courses by selecting See grade details followed by See rubric. Rubrics that use a letter grade, also display the total number of points that student earned on the assignment, while the gradebook simply shows the translated letter grade.

Once a Rubric is applied to an assignment, it appears in Evaluation under Assignment Detail.

1. Based on your role, Rubrics can be found in a few different places:

   • Teachers work with Rubrics from Faculty > My Day > Rubrics

   • Academic managers access them from Academics > Grades > Grading setup >  Rubric bank.

   • Parents and students can find rubrics in the Assignment Center, once applied to an assignment and made available by the teacher.

2. Select +, then add a Rubric Name and optional Description.

3. Select how this rubric evaluates assignments, by Points, Point range, or Comment only.

4. Create the first skill to evaluate. These are the areas where students are graded. An English teacher, for example, may create skills for grammar and comprehension, whereas a science teacher may prefer skills for effective use of strategies or factual data.

5. Proficiency levels for the traditionally ranging from those who demonstrate a mastery level to those that need improvement. This helps students understand what is expected of them in order to receive a specific grade, whether that be a percentage, points, or letter grade.

   • For teachers that plan to associate the rubric with an assignment using Gradebook, the Total Points in the Rubric automatically become the Max Points for the assignment.

6. After the skill is created, select Save to rubric bank to save it or Cancel to start over.

   Note: We recommend saving your Rubric after you setup each skill. This will prevent losing work from the system timing out before you are able to save your work.

7. If additional skills are needed, select Add another skill and follow the previous steps again. Any added skill sections you add retain the previously created Point totals and Proficiency names by default, but you can change them if you want. You can add as many skills and proficiency levels as you want.

   • To remove a proficiency level, select X.

8. Optionally, you can associate the newly created rubric with specific grade levels or departments. These associations, as well as the Rubric Name and Description, are searchable in the Rubric bank.

9. Once completely finished with the rubric, select Save to my Rubrics or Cancel to close without saving.

If you've created a rubric that other faculty or departments could benefit from, why not share it? The Rubric bank is a communal area where teachers and academic managers can view Rubrics created and shared by others. Better yet, teachers can copy and add these Rubrics to their personal list where they can then further edit and refine the rubric for use.

Just like Rubrics, the Rubric bank is role based, so the location entirely depends on whether you're a teacher or academic manager.

• Academic managers access the Rubric bank from Academics > Grades > Grading setup

• Teachers can find the Rubric bank from My Day under the Faculty persona.

Set Rubric bank Permissions

Once a rubric has been added by a manager or teacher, it’ll appear within this list. Before teachers can add their own rubrics to the Rubric bank, academic group managers must first enable sharing from the Rubric bank permissions. By default, the value is set to Allow others to add to rubric bank, though this can be changed to not allow if needed.

Similar to an list, managers and teachers see information from the Rubric bank such as when Rubrics were created, who created them and can change filters, or choose different columns to display.

The Rubric bank can be sorted by:

• Rubric name

• Description

• Created by

• Date created

• Last modified date

Add To My Rubrics

Teachers then select a rubric and add it to their individual rubrics list by selecting Add to my rubrics either from the menu options or selecting the title. From here, rubrics can be added, viewed, edited, or deleted. Select the Rubric name to open the rubric, or select these options right from the context menu.

Delete removes a template from the manager and teacher Rubric bank, though copied rubrics aren't be impacted. To prevent accidental deletions, a confirmation appears once Delete is selected before the rubric is removed. When deleting a template that is associated with an assignment, the confirmation shows all assignments that are affected.

Note: You can recover deleted rubrics for up to one year. After that time, the data is removed permanently.

Copy Rubrics

Similarly to teachers, managers can also copy rubrics as well. The duplicated rubric retains the original title with "Copy Of" appended to the beginning.
